The chain saw is perhaps the most famous and familiar type of gardening technique and certainly one of the most common. The audience of users of such a tool is extremely extensive: those who live outside the cities, including summer residents, as well as builders who work with wood, use electric ones. Chainsaws are “armed” with loggers, tourists, fishermen and hunters, lovers of picnics … However, it is not uncommon for one user to find both varieties in the arsenal: for work near a house where there is electricity, an electric saw is more convenient, and for outdoor events, its gasoline engine is always ready analogue.
In our magazine, you can trace almost the entire history of the development of the market for chainsaws in Russia. “Almost”, because the first models appeared among professional loggers back in the days of the Soviet Union. In the late 90s, the market began to turn into a mass market, and new, more and more sophisticated models began to appear on it regularly. Improved protection systems, ergonomics, improved engines – they became more powerful, more economical and at the same time more environmentally friendly. Manufacturers have offered various systems to simplify start-up and operation, such as tool-less chain tensioning systems. A fresh example of a technological breakthrough in the industry is the massive development of cordless chain saws – something that could not have been dreamed of even 10 years ago. And now, powerful and convenient cordless saws can be found under different brands,
And at the same time, the chain saw as it was and remains the most dangerous type of tool. You can hang a lot of protective systems on it, but all of them will be ineffective if the user does not follow the safety rules. Therefore, be sure to read the instructions before starting work – this will help to avoid many troubles. The safety instructions in the instructions are usually set out in great detail.
In this article, we showed in detail several models of chainsaws from different manufacturers, commenting on the most interesting technical features. In addition, in the issue of GardenTools magazine of the Consumer series WINTER 2014/2015, we have prepared a large article with a lot of photos, clearly explaining all the nuances associated with assembling and preparing a chainsaw for work. For those who have not encountered such a technique before, it will be very useful.

Cordless gardening equipment is a relatively young trend. Such equipment requires a lot of energy, and the task facing the developers consists of two separate subtasks. First, of course, you need a compact and lightweight battery with a long service life and high capacity for operation. And secondly, motors with low power consumption are needed to increase the runtime on a single charge. Husqvarna’s cordless garden range meets both of these requirements.
The easily removable lithium-ion batteries used on Husqvarna manual garden equipment are interchangeable, available in two versions with a capacity of 3.0 and 4.2 A * h. In addition to the batteries themselves, an electronic control and display system is located in their case. By pressing the button on the case, you can assess the level of the remaining charge.
The Husqvarna 436Li chain saw is equipped with a proprietary brushless motor, which, even in comparison with conventional brushless motors, provides lower energy consumption and high torque in all operating modes. The saw can be used with 10 “, 12” or 14 “bars.
A cordless saw is even easier to use than a conventional electric saw: no need to unwind and plug in an extension cord. The battery is simply inserted into its housing and the power button is pressed to activate the electronics. After that, you can start working. If you do not use the saw for more than a minute, it will automatically turn off.
There is another button on the body next to the power button. When pressed, the energy saving mode savE is activated. Full power is rarely required when using a saw, it makes no sense when it comes to sawing boards, small diameter trunks or delimbing. In economy mode, the engine runs at a lower speed, so the battery has enough charge for a longer time. The performance is practically unchanged.
The oil tank has a transparent “sight glass”, one filling of it is enough for approximately three battery charges. For easy preparation and adjustment, the saw is equipped with a tool-free tensioning system. The cover is fixed with a “handwheel”, the chain is tensioned by rotating the tension roller on the sidewall. The oil tank caps and “handwheel” are equipped with spring-loaded folding handles – in general, no additional tools are required during operation. The estimated continuous operation of the saw on one charge is 45 minutes, which is usually more than enough for a gardener.
At present, this model of a chain saw and two varieties of grass trimmers, as well as a garden rider, can work on a single charge up to an hour and a half (the rider, of course, is equipped with larger batteries) from the Husqvarna battery line. Already in 2015, the range is planned to be expanded with a cordless blower and hedge trimmers.

The Partner P350 Chrome chainsaw, later produced under the name Partner P350XT, is one of the most popular models, known on the Russian market for several decades and has undergone more than one modernization. Partner P350S, which replaced it, is one of three models in the series, which also includes Partner P340S and Partner P360S.
Like the previously mentioned modifications, the models of the new series are designed to work in domestic conditions: cutting branches, harvesting firewood and sawing medium-sized logs.
Despite the similar designation of the saws of this series with the designation of the models of the previous generation, it is no longer possible to talk about unification – the difference between them is too great. A centrifugal clutch with three weights, a different type of front handle and its attachment system, the shape of the chain catcher, the location of the controls, the shape of the muffler, the different type of housing cover attachment, a different body material and the type of air filter are just some of the differences that can be seen at a glance. The technical features of all models are similar, they differ in engine power, while even the “lightest” model, Partner P340S, has a little more power, while the weight is slightly lower than that of Partner P350 Crome.
Both fuel and oil filler caps are adjacent to the rear handle. So that the user does not get confused when refueling the saw, the color of the covers on the currently offered saws is different, and the pictograms are applied directly to them (on the saws of this series of earlier releases, the covers were the same color, the pictograms were applied next to them, on the saw body). As before, the covers can be unscrewed manually, and if the effort is insufficient, use the combined screwdriver wrench, using it as a lever. Access to the air filter is simplified, instead of three screws, as in Partner P350 Chrome, one retainer with a large plastic “cap” is used. It can also be unscrewed either manually or with a screwdriver. The saw is equipped with a pre-centrifugal air purification system, an air filter of a modern type,
The engine is classified as “high-speed”, the maximum speed of its crankshaft is 13,000 rpm. The design of the brake, clutch and chain tensioning mechanisms has not changed: the brake mechanism with a band brake is located inside the cover that covers the clutch, the brake shield is attached to the cover, and a screw is used for tension, which is also located in the cover. The muffler is equipped with a spark arrestor mesh for increased safety during work. Of course, a spring anti-vibration system is also provided, which significantly reduces the level of vibrations transmitted to the user’s hands. The brake system is an inertial type: the chain brake is triggered not only when you press the brake handle, but also without touching, with a sharp rebound, which is characteristic when you lose control of the saw (kickback).
The control is simple, separate, to the left of the rear handle is the ignition switch button, to the right is the plastic lever for controlling the air damper position, and below it is the primer button.
Oleo-Mac GS 35; GS 35 C
Chainsaw
ENGINE: 38.9 cm³
POWER: 1.5 kW (2.0 HP)
TIRE: 14 “(35 cm) or 16” (41 cm)
CHAIN (pitch x link thickness): 3/8 “.1 , 3 mm
FUEL TANK
VOLUME : 0.36 L OIL TANK VOLUME: 0.26 L
WEIGHT (without bar and chain): 4.4 kg
FEATURES: “outer” drive sprocket; primer; fastening the brake shield to the body at two points; front tensioner on the body; damper “winter-summer”
PRICE (for December 2014) : from 14,990 rubles.
According to the manufacturer’s classification, the Oleo-Mac GS 35 models of all modifications belong to chainsaws for home use, that is, to models designed for domestic use. These are the lightest chainsaws in the Oleo-Mac range (apart from the professional one-handed pruning models). At the moment, the series is presented in several varieties: Oleo-Mac GS 35 – a model that has been known for a long time, Oleo-Mac GS 35 C went on sale in 2013.
The saws are classified as “high-speed” (13,000 rpm), the engine has one piston ring. A multifunction switch is used for control. The clutch is of the “internal” type; when the side cover is removed, the drive sprocket is visible, attached to the drum. This design has a number of advantages: it is easier to install the chain on a sprocket than on saws with an “external” clutch; it is also easier to remove the drum (for example, to replace it with a worn drive sprocket). The tensioner screw is located on the saw body, parallel to the bar. The brake guard is fixed to the body at two points, the brake mechanism is located in the body. Toothed stop – plastic, cast together with the body. The saw does not pretend to be a “felling” saw, so there is no special need for a steel stop. The chain catcher is cast together with the side cover. The combined anti-vibration system consists of three springs and three rubber shock absorbers, the carburetor is mounted on its own anti-vibration mountings, which allows for stable engine operation under any possible operating conditions. In the partition between the engine and the filter there is a detail that is almost never found on household-grade chainsaws – the “winter-summer” damper. It is designed for the smooth operation of the saw in the winter and to prevent freezing of the air filter during interruptions in work (for Oleo-Mac chainsaws, this system is called the Ice Device). The air filter is two-stage, under the foam filter element there is a flat gasket made of non-woven material. which allows to ensure the stable operation of the engine in any possible operating conditions. There are two technical differences between GS 35 and GS 35 C: the new model has a reinforced starter cover and an oil pump with shutdown of the lubrication supply to the tire at idle. It is easy to distinguish them by their appearance. The body parts of the Oleo-Mac GS 35 are painted in the “corporate” red color, while the Oleo-Mac GS 35 C has the starter and clutch covers in black. The rest of the models are identical.
The saws can be supplied with the headset of the most popular Oregon brand in the world: a bar with a length of 14 or 16 inches with a corresponding chain, the Oleo-Mac GS 35 model also has a modification with a headset made by Carlton (USA) and a bar length of 14 inches. Another delivery option is the Oleo-Mac GS 35 with a 16-inch tire and a PowerSharp automatic sharpening system included. The sharpening device is a plastic case, inside of which a grinding stone is fixed on a spring-loaded stop.
If the chain needs sharpening, the device is attached to the end of the bar, the engine is started and the stop is pressed against the trunk of a tree or any other hard surface. A few seconds – and the chain is sharpened. However, since the headset is by and large a “consumable”, such types of delivery can be considered as configuration options.

Chainsaws in the MasterYard range were previously represented by several electric models, this gasoline saw is a novelty. In appearance and features, this is a fairly simple apparatus, while having several features that facilitate start-up, operation and maintenance, and is suitable for periodic activities in various conditions. The volume of the engine cylinder, the power and the length of the tire are close to the maximum for universal chainsaws, the equipment in which these parameters are higher is already referred to as specialized felling machines.
The control system on this model is separate, the off button and the air damper pull lever are located on different sides of the control handle. A primer is provided for pumping fuel into the carburetor. Reducing vibrations transmitted to the hands is provided by a combined anti-vibration system consisting of springs and rubber shock absorbers that separate the control handle assembly from the motor with the saw headset. The chain and bar on this model are manufactured by Carlton (USA), however, the entire saw set is standardized and there is no fundamental difference for the user. The diaphragm carburetor is manufactured by the Japanese company Walbro, it is practically the standard for most chain saws.
The brake mechanism is located inside the side cover, the clutch is, accordingly, “external”: when the cover is removed, the user sees the clutch mechanism, and the drive sprocket is located between the clutch drum and the saw body. The tensioner mechanism is also located in the side cover, the tensioning screw is perpendicular to the tire. This simplifies the most common operation – adjusting the chain tension. The top cover of the model consists of two parts. The lower part closes the engine compartment, dividing the air flows created by the flywheel impeller: part of the air from it is directed to blowing and cooling the engine cylinder, the second part to the carburetor. When the air flow is twisted by the impeller, dust from it flies to the walls of the body, the air for the carburetor is taken “at a small radius”, near the flywheel. This centrifugal cleaning system significantly extends the filter service intervals. The upper part of the cover can be removed without the use of tools, secured with one nut.
Two features that are not very typical for household-level saws are the presence of a winter-summer damper and the ability to adjust the oil consumption. The engines of all saws are adjusted at the factory to operate at a positive air temperature, because of this, their power is somewhat reduced in winter. The simplest way to reduce the effect of negative temperatures is to supply heated air to the carburetor, especially since there is a heat source for this, this is the saw engine itself. Technically, there is nothing difficult in the solution: a small damper in the partition between the engine and the carburetor. In winter, it is set so that part of the air to the carburetor comes from the engine (there is still no dust hazardous to the engine in winter), in summer it is turned over. At the same time, preheating the air prevents the saw air filter from freezing.

After a hiatus of several years, AL-KO has again included petrol chainsaws in its range. Moreover, this group will be expanded in the future by acquiring the direction of gardening and forestry equipment from Solo, one of the world leaders in the production of chainsaws.
It is easy to distinguish new items – by color. Previously, AL-KO chainsaws were produced in yellow and black colors. At the moment, the line includes three models: AL-KO BKS 3835, BKS 4040 and BKS 4540. The first two numbers are engine displacement, the second pair indicates the length of the tire – a convenient type of designation used by many companies.
The saw is quite simple, belongs to the classic models. The controls are separate: the ignition switch and the choke lever are separate from each other. There is a primer – a transparent button, by pressing which, fuel is pumped into the carburetor before starting work after long breaks. The upper cover of the saw body is fixed with bolts; only part of it – the air filter cover – can be removed without tools. The filter itself is also the most commonly used construction on inexpensive saws: a plastic “box” with nylon nets. All models are equipped with the Easy Start system – an additional spring in the starter mechanism, which more evenly distributes the force transmitted to the crankshaft when the starter rope is pulled. The chain tensioner screw is located on the side, the mechanism itself is in the side cover. This design is a little more complicated than the end screw-tensioner, but it is much more convenient to use.
The saw kit includes not only a universal wrench combined with a screwdriver, but also another small screwdriver for adjusting the carburetor (a standard screwdriver on the wrench is of little use for such a purpose – it is too large). In addition, the saw is equipped with a file for sharpening the teeth. It seems to be a trifle, only for the convenience of work, it is better not to forget to grind the chain from time to time: you can cut with a completely dull chain, but the result will be appropriate. A dull chain means additional stress on the engine, increased fuel consumption, wasted time and reduced operational safety. The time spent on fine-tuning the chain is small, if you sharpen the chain often, but little by little, then special qualifications are not required.
A useful, albeit simple, feature of this line is the body color. Paradoxically, even such a rather large tool as a chainsaw is quite realistic to lose when working in the forest: it is worth putting it on the ground, walking back a few steps, distracting yourself – and you will have to spend some time looking for it. And the combination of three different bright colors can help here, and at any time of the year. And, of course, it is much easier to “see” this particular saw on a store shelf.

One of the most powerful chainsaws in the assortment of the Zubr company is offered in three versions: “type 2” – with tires 400 or 450 mm long and a groove width of 0.058 “(1.5 mm) and” type 3 “- 500 mm long, with a thinner groove 0.050 ″ (1.3 mm). The dimensions of the tire and chains are standardized, they are not in short supply. By the way, “Zubr” offers these consumables under its own trademark. The saw has an extended configuration. The “standard delivery set” of such equipment – a saw, a chain, a bar, a protective cover, a universal key and, of course, packaging and instructions – is supplemented here with a few more useful things. This is a container for mixing fuel, a thin screwdriver that can be used to adjust the carburetor (a universal wrench screwdriver is not suitable for this purpose – it is too big), as well as a spare plastic starter coil: practice shows that it is this element that most often fails, and almost always – due to improper operation. At least in the statistics of service centers of any brand, the repair of starters makes up a significant share of all calls, and it is the coil that wears out mainly – from non-observance of the sequence of actions when starting or even too sharp jerks of the cable.
An engine with a volume of about 50 cm3 for chainsaws is considered quite large and, accordingly, powerful, therefore, in order to facilitate the pulling of the cable (and at the same time reduce the load on the starter elements), the saw is equipped with a decompression valve. Before starting, it must be pressed, which significantly reduces the force that must be applied to the traction cable. When the pressure in the cylinder rises, that is, immediately after the engine “seizes” and the pressure in the cylinder rises, the valve will automatically close.
The saw is equipped with a separate control system – a toggle switch for turning on the ignition and a pull handle for controlling the air damper. Carburetor – Walbro (made in Japan). A primer is provided to facilitate cold starts after shutdown. Other controls and protections are standard: two buttons (engine speed control and interlock) on the rear handle, a brake flap in front of the front handle, a bumper and a chain catcher. The response time of the chain brake is 0.12 s. An automatic chain lubrication system supplies oil to the headset depending on the load. At idle, when the chain does not move, the oil supply is cut off. Its more economical consumption is also facilitated by the holes on the shanks of the chain links, which hold and evenly distribute the lubricant during operation.
Engines of the Zubr saws are classified as “high-speed”, the maximum crankshaft rotation speed is 12,500 rpm. To ensure optimum performance of the engine and the saw itself throughout the entire life cycle, the company offers its own semi-synthetic and synthetic oils for two-stroke engines, as well as oil for lubricating saw chains.
Denzel GS-36 X-Pro
Chainsaw
ENGINE: 36.0 cm³
POWER: 1.4 kW (1.9 hp)
TIRE: 14 “(35 cm)
CHAIN (pitch x shank thickness): 3/8″. 1.3 mm
FUEL TANK CAPACITY : 0.48 L
OIL TANK CAPACITY: 0.26 L

FEATURES: “internal” drive sprocket; primer; fastening the front shield at two points; side tensioner (mechanism in the cover); toolless access to the filter; lightweight launch system; adjustable oil pump
PRICE (as of December 2014) : 5863 rubles.
Despite the fact that this saw is the lightest Denzel has, it has a number of features that are not always characteristic of more powerful models on the market: an adjustable oil pump in a metal case, a side tensioner, a removable gear stop, a multi-point anti-vibration system (springs and rubber shock absorbers) |
The top cover is secured with a single thumb screw and can be easily removed. The tank caps can be unscrewed manually or using a lever (eg the supplied key). The brake flap is mounted on two hinges |

The design of the air filter and controls is typical of inexpensive saws. The filter is a plastic “box” with a grid, the damper is controlled by a pull lever, the ignition key switch is located separately. A primer is available (it is not often found in this category). Carburetor – adjustable for all three screws, manufactured by Yat (not the most common brand, but with a good reputation) |
A rather rare clutch design: three separate springs instead of one annular. It comes across mainly on some saws from higher price categories. The chain catcher is plastic, replaceable, also original. Headset – Oregon, this is put on many chainsaws |
![]() |
![]() |
It is the lightest saw in the Denzel family, the full line consists of four fairly similar models, differing in power and bar length (up to 2.6 HP and up to 45 cm). Nevertheless, even this saw has a solid set of functional features, some of which are uncharacteristic for this price category. The saw is equipped with an oil pump in a metal housing, which is also adjustable. The chain is tightened with a screw from the side (the tensioning mechanism is assembled inside the cover). The clutch is three-cam, with three springs. The brake shield is mounted on two pivots, and includes a primer and a removable spike. The top cover covering the filter is fixed on one special “thumbscrew”; to remove it, it is enough to turn the screw by hand through 180 ° (usually a screw or nut with a fine thread is used, which have to be unscrewed and twisted for quite a long time). The saw package includes not only the traditional tire cover and universal wrench, but also a plastic container for mixing the oil. Of course, individually, all these “little things” do not greatly increase the cost of production, but together they are rare in the “household” sector. Simply put, they did not economize on the little things that affect the convenience of work.
Other elements are more or less typical for household saws, at least they come across them much more often. However, here, too, some design-related nuances can be noted: for example, the rounded shape of all plastic elements, arrows and other pictograms molded on some parts, an ergonomic starter handle.
